The same stain will have different effects on different species of wood.

IE, Honey Oak, my favorite, will have a different color on pine than oak and so on.

So, to answer your question, I would take my sample of wood and go to a dealer that will work with you and let you dabble different stains on the wood for the effect you want. A paint dealer will do this for you, but a home center won't have the time or interest.

What ever you do, you DO NOT want any polyurethane on that wood. Poly automatically makes things yellow, oil poly does, water poly does not as much.
