....and there is no reason you could not put them on their own, separate breaker provided you have the space to do so, but, regardless of how you tie them in, they do need to be on a circuit controlled by a breaker.

The reason they should not be on the main breaker is that a main breaker will be 50, 100 amp, or more, and you won't be wiring them with anything larger than 12 guage. So, if they are wired with 12, put them on a 20amp or lower breaker; use a 15amp breaker if they are wired with 14. Your wire size is the controlling factor here.
