Most pine will dry out during the summer time with the heat and uv of the sun.

This person is giving you very good advice, because the osmosis or evaporation of internal juices in the wood will come out regardless of what you put on the surface and it will take that off with it.

The part I am scratching my head on is the long period of time he/she suggested.

If the pine is recently harvested, did it go into a kiln for drying? you know, my more concerning issue is the drying out period, what shapes the wood will take on.

Come back with the region in which you reside and more details.

Is this possibly what we call R-105 tounge and grooved siding pine?
