PVC, Cast Iron, or what.

If its old, be careful with that snake.

sounds like constriction of some sort. If you have cast iron, do you have any tree roots that could be allowing water to pass, but solids or semi solids get hung up?

You could have a build up of line from the washer that is hung up on a bend somewhere.

I would go on the pretense that you have a constriction in the pipes due to foreign matters that need moving out.

How you address these foreign matters really depends on the condition of your pipes. somethimes, snakes, heavy chemicals will make matters so much worse.

I think I would consult a plumber and have him/her take on the responsibility if the pipes are very old.
