it does need to be no smaller than the span between your two adjoining rafters which should be about 24" on center.

Do the "sistering" procedure to attach a 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 to the inside orig rafters to make something to screw the new rock into. Do your tape and bed work, would suggest the fiber mesh tape this time and while your up there I would do what ever you need to do to prevent the pan from overflowing again if that was the problem.

Should not be that big of a project, the texturing might be the most difficult part.
