Hi Bob,

You can use aluminum nails, or steel nails that are double-dipped in molten, hot zinc (the better of the 2 nails to use.) Sure, try to get a few of the nails to hit the studs, more so depending on the sheathing (especially if it's like gypsm board or particle board.)

For your purposes, you want at least 1" of the nail in the sheathing. You'll need more nail if you want to hit a stud (at least 1/2" more.) Remember, DON'T set the nail all the way into the sheathing! You want to allow the vinyl to move left-and-right. (I hope you have Installation Instruction ...)
