my 1949 ranch style home kitchen ceiling has two layers of drywall. the key is to use long enough drywall screws to get a good attachment to the ceiling joist. no need to worry that the edges of the new layer of drywall is not over the walls ..the key is to ensure you use sufficient numbers of screws to secure it well to the joist. might be best to go with the thnnest available of drywall ...Your light fixture junction boxes will be recessed below the new drywall but you can make up for that with longer threaded screws of the same size. good luck LJ
