I recommend area rugs and runners for high traffic areas. Use the ones that have the rubber backing already sewn into them at the factory. You can buy almost any carpet and buy the rubber backing SEPARATE from the carpte to lay on the floor so it doesn't scratch it. The problem is that the carpet, depending on its size, may slide off the rubber and eventually scratch up your floor. Also, if your floors get direct sunlight, it will 'bleach' your wood over time. I suggest shear curtains in the least. Reflected sunlight or indirect sunlight is just fine.
My best to ya and hope this helps.
PS: Of course, the rugs will cover your floor up somewhat. But if you want to 'lengthen' the time between refinishes, put the rugs in the high traffic areas and 'diffuse' the direct sunlight.
