in 2x4,use 2" or longer fine thread screws.Now you can nail your jamb stock and trim without worry.
One thing,when you secure the head channel make sure you go through the drywall,channel,and studs that you cut.You can screw the channel to the 2x4 first if you want and then string a line from end to end and adjust the middle up or down for a picture perfect job.
16 gauge trims do go through .25 steel BUT do turn if not shot straight in and can be very messy.Contractor I worked for had hardened trim nails for the gun,they worked better but very costly.
By using the 2x4 wrap you may need to mud a few screws heads so have some good old Durobond 20 or 15 on hand.Luck
