What they say is if the floor covering has a design on it, like squares with dark lines, to get your hands on a section and make sure it is identical, then cut out the smallest design you can. with squares you would cut along the lines to take out to take out the bad section the use that piece as a template to cut out a good piece from the new section. the use a seam sealer to hold it in place. But the main thing I would do is ask at the store where you purchace the new section or flooring and tell them what happened and what you want to do and they should guide you even better than I. They probably hear your story a thousand times over and have the perfect solution.
