Paul, with a lot of woodwork this can be quite a chore, but a #0000 steel wool pad sprayed with furniture polish can be used to polish the finish and remove years of wax buildup and aged surface. Be fairly liberal with the polish, keeping the wool pad damp, or spray directly on the wood and buff. This will give the wood new lustre and a nice, satiny patina.
