I didnt see the show you refer to, but I think I can provide you with a little information. I just sold my home built in 1934, which had a floor of 4 inch square wood tiles approximately 1/2 inch thick. A workman told me this flooring was similar to foundry flooring. The difference being that foundry flooring was 6 inches or more thick. He told me that it was laid on a bed of sawdust and sand, then packed in place with the same, and coated with shellac. Parts of the material between the wood in my floor had come out and it was not grout, so this guy might be right. I am building now and trying to research this flooring my self to put it in my new home. If you have found out anything more please let me know. Hope this helps a little. Good Luck.
