Hi Alex - we recently re-did the floors in our 50-yr.-old house (all are oak hardwood) and had light maple cabinets put in our kitchen; the floor had 6 layers of linoleum, under which was heart pine flooring! We stripped off all of the glue and refinished the floors at the same time as we refinished the oak floors - they match color-wise, but the red in the heart pine really "glows"; I know it might not be as practical as tile floors, but it is really easy on the feet and looks elegant as well!

If you do go with tile and don't have a heated area underneath, I'd definately look into electric radiant floor heating (we did both bathrooms with it under the tile and it is totally worth it and not too expensive!)
