I can't speak to the high temprature issue, but I can tell you that dogs do considerable damage. My dalmation has practically forced me to sand down a two year old wood floor. You may want to consider one of the laminate flooring products such as those made by Pergo. They scratch if you try really hard, but they are much more durable than standard wood.
