wood finish test

Thanks Henry. I looked in a formby brochure and it mentioned a cotton ball test. Dampen a cotton ball with acetone nail polish remover. Touch to an inconspicuous place. If it sticks or the finish softens, then its varnish, lacquer, or shellac. If there is no effect, its paint or polyurethane.

They break it down into 2 groups and have a refinisher to handle the varnish, lacquer, and shellac. Also a remover for the paint and poly.

I'm beginning to think that poly may work best in bathrooms and other high moisture areas or maybe a spar urethane. Any recommendations?
