HELLO
I AM IN THE PROCESS OF SOME INTERIOR REMODELLING AND MOVING AND SHORTENING A WALL THAT SEPARATES MY LIVING / DINING ROOM FROM OUR LOWER HALL.
UPON REMOVING EXISTING DRYWALL I FOUND THERE IS A WOOD BEAM CONSISTING OF 2 PCS 2" X 10"
ATTACHED WITH NAILS THAT SPANS AN OPENING OF 6 FEET AND 4 FEET AND IN BETWEEN THESE TWO OPENINGS IS A VERY SMALL SUPPORT WALL OF 2 FEET LONG.
WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO IS WIDEN THE SECOND EXISTING OPENING OF 4 FEET TO BECOME 6 FEET TO MATCH THE OTHER OPENING.
MY QUESTION IS THIS, CAN I CUT BACK ON ONE SIDE OF THE 2 X 10'S AND STAGGER A LONGER 2X10 TO INCREASE THE LENGTH OF THE BEAM AND ATTACH A THIRD 2X10 ON THE OTHER SIDE RUNNING TWO THIRDS THE WAY OF THE EXISTING 2X 10'S AND BOLT THEM ALL TOGETHER TO CREATE A LONGER BEAM WITHOUT REMOVING AND SHORING UP ETC.
I AM ONLY GOING TO EXTEND THE BEAM BY ROUGHLY 2-3 MORE FEET AND THEN SUPPORT UNER THAT END WITH A DOUBLE 2 X 6 POST.
WILL I SEE ANY SHIFTING OR ENCOUNTER ANY OTHER PROBLEMS BY DOING THIS?

THANX ANDY C.
