Why add moisture to the inside air?

I agree with you in principle and for this reason I did not install a humidifier last winter. I don't like the idea of pumping moisture into the house.

But... the floors shrank excessively and some gaps appeared around the window and door frames and around the crown moldings. Apparently there was not enough moisture buildup in the house, either because of the central heat or gaps in the building envelope.

And I've been told that our two young kids "need" more moisture in the air...
