why a newcomer values the old

Simply put, as a newcomer to the site and new homeowner of an old house I'm trying to renovate, I don't even know what I don't know. Not only do I get badly needed detailed answers to questions as they come up, by reading all the posts I become aware of the bigger picture.

I would echo what's been suggested already - give us a choice. Research requires qualitative and quantitative options - you often have to start from loosely connected material if you don't know exactly what you're looking for and you also need to be able to go from general to minutely specific.
