You need to explore further into why you want a fireplace. DrHome made some very general points that do not hold true for every region in the country. If you like to come home and flip a switch for a fire, get gas. If you like to turn it off that quick and go to bed, get gas. If you don't mind the generic hiss (no crackle) of the fire, get gas. If you don't like the art of building & stoking a fire, get gas. If you don't like maintaining a wood supply, get gas. If you don't like to clean up ashes, get gas. But... if you like the smell, heat, noise & romance of a real wood fireplace there is absolutely no comparison, get wood. Think about how you will use it and I am sure you will make the right decision.
