Whole House Fans

Posted by Bill Child on July 21st, 2000 02:38 PM

I have a 2-story home with vaulted ceilings throughout and no attic. My wife described the style as 'shed-roof' design. I would like to install a whole house fan as summer evenings are generally cool and pleasant where we live, and I would like to cut down on A/C use. Since I have no attic, can the fan be installed directly into the ceiling, venting to the outside? I'm obviously concerned about leakage, heat loss, etc. Alternatively, one of the upstairs bedrooms which is currently just an unused spare room, has a vertical wall which overlooks a fairly protected area of the roof. Is it feasible to mount a whole house fan through the siding of the house rather than the roof?

I appreciate any thoughts on the matter, thanks.
