whole house fans

I've had a whole house fan in the hall at the top of the stairs for years. It works excellent. It just dumps house air into the attic, but the attic is reasonably well ventilated and this pushes the hot air out of the attic as well(cooler evening air is pulled in the windows from outside.
Our only use is to put it on for about 10-15 minutes in the evening (it can be noisy as it's about 24" diameter & 1/2 HP. It really creates a flow through the house and you can "direct" it according to which windows you leave open.
In 15 min it has brought in cooler evening air, vented the house, and pushed the hot air out of the attic. Great.
