Shannon, I'm not a drywall expert either but I believe that you have to use blue board instead of regular drywall if you are going to skim coat. The second thing is that this is really a job for the pro's. It is not that you can't learn to do it but rather there is an art to doing it that has to be learned. And the place to learn this technique is not on your living room walls if you expect to have a perfect job. Rembrant or Van Gogh only used a couple of bucks worth of paint and canvas but look what their work is worth. So it's not just the tools that matter. Talk to a pro.
