Quick shout out to Steve and JB for previous answers...THANK YOU!!

Anyhoo...I just took off wood shingles from my entire bathroom wall (what were they thinkin' in the 70's anyway??) and have applied mucho joint compound. Now I'm ready to paint but there is one problem...all along the edge of the shower tile there is this gray substance that I've tried to sand off only to make the edge of the tiling look worse (I'm pretty sure that it's excess grout)...

My question:
Do I have to replace these tiles along the edge or can I touch up these rough edges with glaze. I don't know the consistency of glaze and am wondering if it's possible to get a smoothe appearance (by feathering) after application...in other words I want it to look natural...
