When is a fireplace not a fireplace?

Posted by Debbi on January 15th, 2000 12:51 PM

Dear Bob,
I have a wonderful old restored victorian 1899 home. There are 6 fireplaces...or so i thought. They have pretty mantels but the actual fireboxes were plastered over. Upon opening one of them, we found a chimney..but no fireplace. I am very disappointed. This doesn't make any sense to me that someone would put somewhat ornate mantels around chimneys. Is it possible that we are missing something? I'd love to have these opened and working. Someone said they must be there to use mini woodstoves, but that just doesn't make logical sense to me. Can you help? Have you ever seen this? I love your show and still miss you on "This Old House".! thanx for your help! Also, if you could provide a referral of a specialist who could help and do the work, I'd really appreciate it!
