Everything Jim said makes sense, the only thing I would add it to make sure that exterior lights are on a circuit that is protected by a gfci outlet or breaker. If your ext. outlet has a red and black button, you are ok. If not, get one installed so you don't get shocked. Also, keep ends of cords and connections etc. up off the ground where they won't come into contact with rainwater or snow and short out or shock you.
