Those (bc's) were my thoughts as well. If you have a sample of what you want it to look like (like some of the old mortar still between the bricks) then a mason experienced in renovations should be able to handle it for you. I ran into many different shades, from white to gray to red, in my Boston, Beacon Hill renovations (OLD brick and brownstone homes)and my mason matched it perfectly every time. You might want to ask yourself if you want to try to make it look like it did when it was new, or do you want to just have it look like what is still there? It may have started out whitish and now be dark gray from dirt and age. You may want to consider re-pointing every single joint so that whatever color you choose will be new and exactly the same. This will involve extra work of removing a little mortar from every joint. Just some thoughts...
