Bar tops can be whatever you want! I used 3/4" mahogany plywood laminated to 3/4" birch plywood. I used solid mahogany to make a drip tray for the inside. The front edge is upholstered with foam rubber and vinyl. The back two outside edges are edged in 1-1/2 x 3/4 inch solid mahogany.
My bro-in-law is using a simple formica laminate. The edging is oak, stained a light color.
A guy in california I know has done two. The first was a decopage. The second was tiled.
Rockler ( www.rockler.com ) has plans and parts. Formica (wilson, etc) are available at any home improvement center.
A good book on making kitchen counters will have ideas.
