Is it formica? If so, please forget about painting it. In short order, the paint will eventually 'chip' or flake off, and end up in your salad! It is a health risk.
Some folks may recommend you simply have the countertop re-laminated. I suggest otherwise. If you go the route-of-replacement, then find a pro that will make templates of the countertops WHILE STILL IN PLACE IN THE KITCHEN, and go back to the shop and make new countertops for you. (Some pros want to take the existing tops w/them and leave you with plywood sheets to work on. For some folks, that's OK. But mine were re-done with the templates being the ONLY 'thing' being removed from the kitchen.)
