That's funny! I mean my example and your real-life situation.
You can get a Tamper at Home Depot, or at Sears, or even at True Value. You may even be able to get one at the Lawn & Garden Shops of stores like K-Mart and the like. All it is is a steel plate with a wooden handle screwed into the middle of it.
In addition, check your gutters and downspouts. In a heavy rain, get an umbrella and put on some boots and go out to see if water is overflowing your gutters. If so, they may need to be re-hung, or the downspouts are clogged. You should look at the flow coming out ALL your downspouts too. If the gutters are overflowing, and you see a disproportionate amount of water coming out the spout, it's probably clogged. The downspouts should extend at least 3' from the house too, and the water should not pool. (IF it does, you may need to fix that too.)
