I live at the bottom of a very steep long hill, once the house begins the terrain is very flat until it reaches the street. We do get water in one corner of the basement every time it rains, and flods about half the basement with about 3-5 inches of water. Also, the lawn next to the leaking corner is always damp.
Is this situation a high water table? (please see ilustration below)

Any suggestions for solving this drainage problem? We do have new gutters installed with surface french drains to carry away the water. But I suspect we need a better solution than that.
