prettier, but it is definately harder and more labor intensive.

I would suggest that you first sand it down from coarse paper to medium to fine then to steel wool.

Then I would prime in with a good primer.

Then I would use a good quality gloss or enamel oil based paint. This will be very durable and look factory finished.

Remember, several light coats of paint in stead of few heavy coats.
