I had this problem and found I needed to adjust the pressure settings on the pump (if you have a submersible the pressure switch will be at the pressure tank). Once I replaced the broken guage (the prior owner never maintained anything!) found the pump was coming out at something like 10 psi and shutting off at 32-35. I adjusted the switch to shut off at 45 and come on sooner. Don't think I can get much more since it is 110 volt and a shallow well type (the submersible at the other house was 220v and 60 psi was no sweat). Also we had air in the system, that was causing sputtering, etc. It was caused by a faulty softener, somehow letting air into the system. Once the softener was replaced no more problem. Good luck!
