Weight bearing Capability of a Deck

Posted by Gary Caster on May 24th, 1998 02:19 PM

Want to put a spa on a cantilevered deck. The joists fr the deck are extensionsof the 2X12 floor joists - spaced 16" - and notched to 2x10 for the deck portion. Deck is cantilevered 5'6". Spa I want to use is 5'2" X 6'10" and has a fully loaded weight of 2443#'s. The footprint of the spa is 28.4 sq. ft. which I have calculated to be about 86 #'s per sq. ft. Can I put the spa there without any additional support? A friend tol me that the deck would support several times what I'm contemplating. I can also put a free-standing brace under the outside edge of the deck to take the dead-load off but I don't want to do that unless it's necessary. Any help or direction would be appreciated.
