Weather treating "raw" wood (tree pieces)?

We have sliced up a dead hardwood tree and are planning on using some of the "disks" (thin rounds) as "stepping stones". I realize cedar would be best, but it didn't work out that way.

Does anyone have experience applying any sort of sealant or any other products to give some protection agains rot? I know they won't last forever being in direct contact with the ground and elements, but is there a product that could at least slow the rotting process?
