: : firstname.lastname@example.org : kill the power to the circuit [pull the fuse or switch off the circuit breaker. Take the incoming [hot] wiring to the first 3-way switch [a special switch necessary at both of the switching locations]. Hook the black [hot] lead to the center position on the switch. hook up a red lead to one of the other terminal positions on the switch and a white lead to the remaining terminal. run the white wire to the light fixture, connecting it to one terminal on that fixture. then run another white wire from the second terminal on the light fixture to the second switch.Back now to the first switch, and take those blackand red wires and route them to the second switch, usingthe most direct routing. they can be routed right along with the white wire if that is convenient. At the second 3-way switch connect the red and the black wires to the two outer terminals and the white to the center terminal. That's it. If you want to verify what you believe I have described , hook the components up on a workbench put the fuse back in and check out the sytem. The switches no longer work in the usual manner[switch upward to turn on the light ,switch down to turn it off] instead any activation of either switch will change whatever is the current status of the light.Keep your fingers off of the terminals when power is back in the circuit.
