NO, JAN, YOU CAN'T. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A PRETTY GOOD AMOUNT OF WAX ON THE FLOOR AND NO FINISH WILL BOND WELL WITH WAX. APPLYING ANY KIND OR CLEAR FINISH WILL CAUSE ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS. TRYING TO WASH OFF THE WAX WITH A SOLVENT IS POSSIBLE BUT ALSO A BIG SAFETY HAZARD.

YOUR BEST OPTION IS TO SAND AND REFINISH IF YOUR FLOOR IS CAPABLE OF BEING SANDED. SOME PREFINISHED FLOORS DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH THICKNESS TO ALLOW IT. CHECK THIS POINT BEFORE YOU SAND.
