Water pipe rattle & water run in toilet

Posted by Michele on December 18th, 2002 09:34 AM

I purchase my home about a year ago. It is 100 years old. What I notice after someone runs water in our home whether upstairs or down, when they turn it off the pipes will rattle. I tried turning all of the water off & then turn off the main water wait about 20 min. to relieve any air in the pipes, then turn on the main water then run one of the faucets. The pipes still rattle. The sound comes from the pipes in the wall not in the basement.

Also, without anyone using the toilet about 5 separate times w/in a 24 hour period you would hear the toilet water run (like the bowl is filling up) then it will stop.

Any advice you have would be great. Thanks.
