Water in basement/french drain

Posted by Carol on February 25th, 2000 04:00 PM

My husband has been trying to figure out why we are getting water in our basement and isn't having much luck. He wanted to try and figure it out without hiring a contractor if we don't have to. The house is about 42 years old, and for the most part the basement is dry. There is just one area where it is leaking. We were told by the previous owners that there is a french drain and there are sump pumps. He has cleaned the gutters, checked the spouts so they are away from the house, checked and caulked aroung the porch that is right outside where the leak is. I will suggest the testing of the gutters and spouts in the rain as suggested...i also found the book "The Original Basement Waterproofing Handbook" online and we'll get that. Any other suggestions or ideas? Thanks.
