Water Heater Pinging noise

I have an American ProLine Water heater that is about 3years old. In the past month, it has begun to make a "pinging" sound. We have checked the flame, the inlet, outlet pipes, etc. with no visible problems. The sound tends to occur when a hot water source is active in the house such as the shower. Anyway, the sound is something like boiling water in a metal can. I sounds like an old metal stove top coffie maker. It is important to note that the noise was not there prior to a month ago. My father-in-law says it sounds simmilar to "cavitation noise in a large pump", but I dont even know what that means. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appriciated. THanks
