Can speak to filtration, but not softening. We have a well and septic. I put in a see thru "blow down" filter 100 mesh, followed by a carbon 5 micron filter. Kind you by at Home Depot or Lowes. The blow down works GREAT. If you have a sump pump, you can run the waste there, but I don't so I just catch the water in a big plastic container from home supply center as well. You can see when it gets clogged and it keeps the 5 micron carbon cartidge lasting a lot longer. I did all the plumbing myself but thats another story. Good luck.
