Washer rust stains

Hi, Keirsten. About all I can do is tell you that you are not alone. We have a very old washer with rusting around the lid hinge. It appears to me that occaionally a flake of rust falls into the washer basket and makes the same kind of stain that you describe. In our case, paint would not help since the metal remaining is pretty thin and paint would not stick well to the rust that's already there. If you don't see any obvious rust, you might check inside the basket with a mirror and flashlight to see if there are any rust spots that you can find. There are special porcelain paints at the home centers to fix problems on the metal surfaces.
