wall switch for ceiling light not working

Posted by jackie on January 21st, 2001 10:13 AM

I installed a ceiling fan WITHOUT A LIGHT KIT and the wall switch does not work.

The wiring was already in place. The wall switch is a regular rocker switch (I know I will need to buy a new one for a fan) and it has a red, a black and a ground connected to it. The white is connected to other whites in a wire nut. The ceiling box has a red, a black, a white and a ground. When I installed the fan, I connected black to black, white to white, and ground to ground. I put the red in a wire nut because I figured it was for the light, which I do not have.

After installing it, I figured I could turn it on and off with the wall switch. But it does not work. I have to use the pull chain. I would like to replace the wall switch with a fan control switch and control the fan from it.

I am thinking that if I had wired the red from the ceiling to the black from the fan, it might have worked. I would like to solve this problem without having to dismantle the ceiling fan and rewire it. Is this possible?
