Wainscoting on plaster walls

Hello. I would like to install wainscoting in the dining room of my 1927 home. The walls are plaster.

I'm wondering if I can use a brad nailer right on the wall, or if I have to secure some planks to the wall first to nail the wainscoting too.

I'd much rather nail it right to the wall, but if that is a bad idea I'd like to know beforehand.
