I currently have cedar shake siding. I have been pricing arounf vinyl siding and several contractors recommended not to remove the old siding. My problem is that my windows are going to look set in too far for my taste(wife's taste). I have several questions regarding this procedure: 1) Do the cedar shakes have any R-value? 2) I calculated that putting the vinyl siding over the shakes, my windows will be set in another 1.5 inches, Am I correct? 3) Should I remove the shakes? 4) How much should I be quoted per square to have the vinyl siding installed? 5) How easy or hard is it to install this myself? (I'm pretty handy with do it yourself projects).
