Vinyl is usually a cover up of existing damage

and most people do not take the time and expense to repair this first before siding goes over it and also ill fated siding people could care about fixing this first since it will not show.

But, as you see, sometimes it does.

several months will not most likely make any differences at all for repairs.

What I would do is to carefully remove the siding in the affected area and mark it for proper re installation later.

Then get in there with a pry bar and take out the bad wood, then just replace it. If rafters are bad, the tails are more than likely the problems, you will need to do some sistering to attach on.

fix it up and then prime it and then paint it and do not seal it up until everything has dried and cured out. This should do it.

Just remember how every thing came off and put it back in that order.
