Charles, just so that you had something substantial to nail your jamb and casing to, you'd at least use a double 2X4, although if memory serves correct you could no longer by code use 2X4 in this case. Anyway, if you used a 2X4, then you'd have to cut all those cripple studs to go above it, and the same is true if a 2X6 or 2X8 were used, but it gets even harder to attach such short pieces without them splitting. So, to me it makes more sense to maybe be a bit overbuilt, but save time and labor by using the larger header.
