Besides getting your problem fixed, as BobB described, you should always have a battery backup for your computer. Power drops and spikes are a leading cause of registry corruption that ends up requiring a complete Windows install and loss of data. You will experience these, even without the furnace type issue you described. Most you won't even notice or be aware of. I have not needed to reinstall a corrupt Windows install on 15+ computers for over a year now that I put them all on battery backups. Before, I would have to do 2 or 3 a year, at least. One for under $80 is APC Back-UPS ES 500VA - you can get 'em at Staples or other office store. Also plug your modem's phone line through it, as I lost all my modems and phones once when I took a lightning hit through the phone lines.
