Hi, Betsy. How about an update on how this turned out? One tip is that I would drill a couple of hole for screws when you were still on the ground. Drill from the old edge into the notch with 2 holes just big enough to clear the screw shank. You can then use 6" galvanized screws to hold the joists to the beam. 5" screws would be plenty, if you can find them, but that might be tough. Put a dollop of Liquid Nails or silicon sealer over the top of the screw heads to seal the hole. If you are using an electric drill to run the screws, they should countersink themselves a little and you want to keep water out, if possible.
