Up to Code

Yes, we are working with code specs as we had to have the design approved for the permit (we like to do things legally). The entire plan was approved and notes by our building inspector were provided, but none of those notes make any mention of braces. We bought deck plans to aid us but they recommend braces for posts longer than 4 feet.

One other note for this topic is that the deck IS NOT free standing. Do we need braces in all directions or just east-west (the deck moves east-west but since it is attached to the house, there is no north-south movement)? We want to make sure that everything is up to code so please don't think that we just want to get this done as fast as possible. We have already been working on this project for over a week, so time really is not an issue.
