Uneven floors - fiddle with teleposts or self-leveling compound

Our house is 12 years old, but we have some severely uneven floors in several rooms on the main and second floors. I attribute this to the house settling over the last 10yrs. I can trace some of the bump in the main floor to a steel beam and telepost in the basement, but hesitate to adjust as it may cause problems on the second floor. I would like to put down ceramic tile, but am concerned about the unevenness. I do plan to add an additional 3/4" of plywood subfloor to increase stiffness (its just 5/8" osb now)
